Solo never fails to surprise with a new coffee shop. It seems like every time I visit this city, there’s always one or two new cafés tucked into its various corners. And sure enough, I found another one — this time in Ketelan, Banjarsari, not far from the northwest corner of Pura Mangkunegaran. From the outside, the building is striking. Were it not for the power lines crisscrossing overhead, you might almost convince yourself you were in Japan, hehe. I was initially tempted to skip this place, but an afternoon drizzle seemed to nudge me into taking a short break at this café, which clearly targets the twenty-something crowd. This is Gettsee.

From the porch, this café already exudes a certain class. Under the branding of ‘coffee & donut’, it naturally makes these two items its flagship. The F1 milk coffee is displayed prominently on the lightbox up front. Without a second thought, I placed my order.

The donut display case with its pretty decorations was quite enticing. Prices are still in the teens of thousands of rupiah. Naturally, I went for the red velvet — as a comparison with a similar coffee & donut shop back in Jogja. Same target market, same kind of snack pairing.

The many options on the tablet left me indecisive. Better to just ask what the regulars recommend. Order placed. Coffee can be picked up directly at the counter next door, while food will be brought to your table along with a table number to display.

As for the coffee — somehow legit — though I’m honestly curious why this particular menu is highlighted as the star. Sadly, I forgot to ask for less ice, so the caffeine ended up diluted as the ice melted away. The donut probably warrants further experimentation. The toppings were generous and even, but the dough crust was a bit tough for my liking, even though the inside was genuinely soft. A fork was provided, but it was quite hard to cut through, especially without holding down the paper liner underneath. No napkins were set out from the start either, so things got messy fast while eating. And it was a bit of a hassle having to walk all the way to the bar just for a sheet or two of tissue — especially if you’re seated far away.

The location is strategic and the vibe is nice, but this café isn’t really suited for working, even though there’s a row of seats facing the street with a power outlet at each spot. Every corner is undeniably aesthetic for selfies, though the internet connectivity is a bit of a homework assignment. Even so, Gettsee is sure to become one of the top destinations for young people in the Greater Solo area.
